Five police officers penalized over Jēkabpils murder case

After the brutal murder of a woman in Jēkabpils in April, disciplinary measures for five officials of the Austrumzemgale precinct of the State Police (VP) have been applied, and a new chief has been appointed, VP said on August 17.

A police inspection and disciplinary investigation concluded that a number of officials from the East Land District of the VP Zemgale Regional Administration have not acted professionally in some cases, including failing to carry out search activities.

During the examination of the service, it was also concluded that officials have not been able to analyze and see the links in the overall picture of the murder suspect Leons Rusiņš' illegal activities in a timely manner.

Five persons have been subjected to disciplinary measures. Changes have also been made to the management of the Austrumzemgale district of the VP Zemgale Region. It has already been reported that Rolands Bērziņš, chief of the precinct, has been dismissed over the case. A new chief, Major Evita Galviņa, has been appointed as of September 1.
