Seven year prison sentence for hit-and-run

The Zemgale District Court has sentenced a driver to seven years in prison for hitting a pedestrian and injuring another pedestrian, the prosecutor's office told news agency LETA October 17.

Last April, a man hit two women crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing in the Čiekurkalns residential area of Rīga.

After the crash, the man fled the scene without helping the victims or calling for emergency medical assistance.

The accident caused serious injuries to one female victim and fatal injuries to the other.

The defendant was driving without a driving license.

The court found the man guilty of the offenses and sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment and seven years and six months' driving ban. The court also upheld the victims' claims for compensation for non-material damage amounting to €37,500.

The other parties involved in the proceedings may appeal against the verdict to the Regional Court of Zemgale.
