Former election authority head implicated in fraud investigation

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has referred a case to the prosecution in which two current and one former officials of the Central Election Commission (CVK) are accused of large-scale fraud, KNAB said on February 22.

The crimes committed caused at least 149 920 EUR losses for the CVK. Former head of CVK Kristine Bērziņa is also among the accused.

The pretrial evidence suggests that an IT company, with the support of Bērziņa and the other accused employees of CVK, committed illegal activities to ensure that the represented IT company gots to provide services related to the electronic systems used for the 2021 municipal elections.

The evidence suggests that the IT company provided false data in documentation and received money for work that wasn't carried out.

No evidence has been obtained to doubt the legitimacy of the 2021 municipal election results, however.

The prosecution must decide on the further course of action.
