Latvian citizen to be prosecuted for praising war crimes

On June 17 this year, the State Security Service (VDD) urged the Prosecutor's Office to prosecute a Latvian citizen for publicly praising and justifying war crimes committed by Russia, as well as inciting national and ethnic hatred in society.

On March 26 this year, the VDD initiated criminal proceedings against this person under Article 74.1 and Article 78 of the Criminal Law.

The service found several video recordings in Russian on the social media "TikTok", in which the person disseminated various hate speeches and messages against Latvians and Ukrainians in response to the unprovoked and unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, as well as speeches aimed at inciting national and ethnic hatred.

The VDD previously said that on April 25 this year, the Service carried out criminal proceedings at a facility near Riga, where several data carriers, personal records, clothing, and other items with Russian and Soviet symbols were seized for further investigation.

The person came to the attention of the VDD in 2023 for aggressive comments on the social networking site "Facebook" expressing support for Russia. In August last year, the VDD conducted preventive talks with the person, warning that his activities on the internet would bring him closer to criminal offenses, which are punishable by criminal law.
