State Police say that the attack is not related to professional activity, but they do not comment on what happened, and the name of the victim has not yet been released. However the local "Chaika" news portal, referring to its sources, reports that the victim is the manager of the Daugavpils hospital, Inta Vaivode.
The head of the Public Relations Department of the State Police, Simona Grāvīte, confirmed to Latvian Radio that the attack took place, but the police did not provide details about the attack and who was injured, considering that an active investigation is currently underway.
"The state police can confirm that on Friday they received information that a person was injured in Daugavpils. The information available to the police at the moment shows that it is not related to professional activity and there was certainly no premeditated attack, but considering that at the moment an active investigation is underway, we will refrain from further comments for the time being," Grāvīte told Latvijas Radio.
Daugavpils regional hospital has another board member - Edgars Labsvīrs, who told LTV that the hospital refuses to comment for the time being. According to unofficial information, Vaivode was indeed in a critical condition with several wounds, but her state of health has improved, and the State Police promises to provide more information in the near future.
Vaivode assumed the position of the chairman of the board of the hospital last fall, replacing the previous head Grigorijs Semjonovs at a time when it was publicly reported that the hospital was in deep financial difficulties. Before managing the hospital, Vaivode was the director of several private medical centers.
