Fleeing detainee captured in central Rīga

On Friday, 13:30, the State Police caught Mārtiņš Cesmanis, who escaped from a police vehicle the previous day, in central Riga, the police said.

The man has been brought to the detention facility.

At the time of detention the escapee was still in handcuffs but he had somehow managed to commit another crime by stealing clothes and shoes he was wearing. No violence has been involved in this crime, State Police representative Deniss Judajevs said.

Judajevs also said that the car which Cesmanis had escapead on Thursday had been equipped with a cage and three officials were in the car.

Asked why the search efforts had been so extensive if Cesmanis was only convicted of material crimes, Judajevs said Cesmanis was a 'moderate threat' to society.

"We cannot dismiss the fact that his history involves violent crime. He is not a murderer, but there are people convicted of smaller crimes but they are more dangerous and inadequate," said Judajevs.

A criminal case has been launched in connection with fleeing from the police.

Fleeing from law enforcement or detention center can result in a penalty, community service, or deprivation of liberty up to one year.
