Pastor sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexual abuse of minors

The Kurzeme District Court has sentenced an 83-year-old pastor to ten years in prison for sexually assaulting five girls in the Talsi region, the prosecutor's office told LETA April 30.

The man, born in 1941, was accused of performing sexual acts with five girls aged between 7 and 16 against their will, using trust and, in four cases, a state of helplessness, between August 2018 and April 2022 in order to satisfy his sexual desire by physical contact with the victim's body.

The man is also accused of committing acts of a sexual nature without physical contact with the victim's body.

The court found the defendant guilty of the offenses and sentenced him to ten years' imprisonment and three years' probation supervision.

The prosecutor is satisfied with the sentence handed down by the court and does not intend to ask the court to prepare a full judgment.

However, the other parties involved in the proceedings may appeal against the verdict to the Kurzeme Regional Court.

The Prosecutor's Office points out that if there is even the slightest suspicion that a child may have suffered sexual or other forms of abuse, the State Police should be contacted immediately.
