Belarusian citizen in Latvia sentenced to eight years for spying

Riga City Court has sentenced a Belarusian citizen to eight years in prison for spying for Belarusian military intelligence, as well as a three-year probation, LETA reported October 28.

The prosecutor, defender, and defendant will be able to submit a written request for a full judgment to the court within ten days of the date of the short-serving judgment. The full judgment can be appealed or protested within ten days from the availability of the full judgment in the order of appeal to Rīga Regional Court.

The prosecution was initiated by the State Security Service (VDD). The Belarusian citizen was detained on suspicion of espionage by the VDD in close cooperation with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD) on February 15 this year.

The information previously disseminated by the VDD shows that the person has photographed and filmed objects of the Latvian defense system, critical infrastructure of electricity supply, as well as important civil infrastructure facilities. Information gathered in the course of the service investigation shows that the person has obtained intelligence information on at least 17 governmental sites.
