Border Guard caught 322 people with fake Covid certificates in 2021

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Last year, the State Border Guard fined more than 7,000 people for violations of epidemiological regulations when crossing the country's border, Latvian Radio reported March 16.

In most cases, the people did not have a Covid-19 test, so fines were imposed – a total of more than €220 thousand. But border guards also caught the people carrying fake Covid-19 test results or certificates.

"We have 6,616 individuals penalized for the absence of QR codes. In total, the checks were carried out on 262,406 persons. We started to punish more severely, of course, when fake Covid-19 tests appeared. A total of 322 fake tests [and certificates].

"We passed [them] on to the State Police for an investigation. With the involvement of the Prosecutor General's Office all these cases were investigated as criminal offenses regarding the use of falsified documents," said General Guntis Pujāts, Chief of the State Border Guard.
