Denmark returns Kristīne Misāne to Latvia

Take note – story published 4 years ago

Latvian citizen Kristīne Misāne was returned from Denmark to Latvia on March 3, LTV reported.

LTV showed a video of a police car waiting on the runway at Rīga International Airport and collecting a passenger direct from a flight, though it is not possible to definitively identify Misāne from the footage.

Laura Majevska, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, told Latvian Radio that Misāne would have to be returned by March 4, and would be taken into custody by State Police, but declined to specify precidely when and how it would happen.

As previously reported by LSM, Misāne is wanted in South Africa to face charges of child abduction, document forgery and others. She was arrested by Denmark while in transit at Copenhagen airport in December 2018 for a flight to Mozambique and has been in custody ever since, awaiting extradition to South Africa for trial.

She alleges that her former partner, South African citizen Johann Grobler, was abusive towards her and she took two of her children - of which Grobler is father of one and had been granted custody - and fled the country with them in defiance of a South African court order.

Grobler has denied the accusations of abuse. It is likely the former couple will come face to face again if and when a trial gets under way in Latvia.
