Fifteen drunk drivers caught on Christmas Eve

Latvian State Police are repeating advice to motorists to act responsibly after catching 15 drivers under the influence of alcohol on December 24.

Six drunk drivers were detained in both Riga region and Latgale, two drivers under the influence were caught in Kurzeme, and one more in Vidzeme.

At the same time 116 drivers were handed tickets for speeding.

Police remind the public that they will continue to carry out checks on drivers throughout the holiday period.

In addition, police are being kept busy with checks on COVID-19 compliance. 56 administrative infringement proceedings were initiated for offences including gatherings and private events, five for non-compliance with self-isolation, 13 for non-use of mouth and nose shields, 29 for non-completion of the covidpass entry questionnaire, and four for other things such as trading in goods that are not permitted, State Police spokeswoman Krista Andersone told Latvian Radio.
