Former Riga City Council official Ārija Stabiņa, who had fled arrest for years and was detained last year after being deported from Egypt, has pleaded guilty to accusations of taking bribes and wants to reach a settlement with the prosecutor.

The former head of the housing administration of the Riga City Council Housing and Environment Department, Stabiņa was accused of accepting bribes in return for manipulating waiting lines for municipal housing.

After the law enforcement authorities decided to launch a criminal prosecution against Stabiņa, she disappeared in 2013. A year after her disappearance the fugitive of justice was put on the international list of wanted criminals.

Stabiņa is alleged to have taken bribes of about €6,000 in total and now wants to bargain for her sentence. The responsible prosecutor told LTV he expects her to spend real time behind bars.
