The State Police suspect that Biruta Loze, a former prosecutor who used to work at the Prosecutor General’s Office department for the investigation of crimes of totalitarian regimes and who went missing last month, might have been murdered.

The 85-year-old woman left her home in Marupe, outside Riga, on March 13 or 14, and never came back. On March 15, police posted a public announcement of her disappearance on Facebook.

The missing woman is 175 centimeters tall, slender, with long red hair. She was probably dressed in a winter coat, hat and white winter boots.

Police spokeswoman Gita Gzibovska told LETA that a murder investigation has been started because there are suspicions that the women might have become a victim of crime. The former prosecutor is currently being searched in Latvia as there are no indications that she might be in a foreign country.

Although investigators are examining various theories, including that Loze has been murdered in a robbery, one of the theories link her disappearance to her former job as a prosecutor.
