The number of travelers crossing Latvian borders with counterfeit Covid-19 test results is on the rise, the State Border Guard told Latvian Television May 20.

On May 19 the State Border Guard identified 11 persons with counterfeit Covid-19 tests during immigration controls: eight Ukrainian and three Lithuanian citizens. On the other hand, since January 15, when mandatory test results became a requirement for crossing the border, a total of 116 people have been caught with counterfeit tests.

The National Border Guard said that most people with counterfeit Covid-19 test results come from third countries around the world.

“Fake means it's not real. Covid-19 test results are a specific sample document that contains certain properties. And accordingly, if the test results do not conform to a specific sample or contain corrections not approved by the issuing authority, they are falsified,” explained the State Border Guard spokeswoman Kristīne Pētersone.

Pētersone said that there was administrative liability for each falsified test. So far, the State Border Guard has applied penalties ranging from €100 to €618.
