President issues pardon

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On September 6, President Egils Levits examined the pardon requests of 16 convicted persons.

Of these, 14 clemency requests were not supported. One convicted person was pardoned, being completely exempted from serving the additional sentence, while the other convicted person had his criminal record removed, the Presidential Chancellery said.

No details of the identites of those involved, nor the crimes of which they were convicted, were released.

Under the terms of the constitution, the president does have the power to grant pardons to convicted persons. The President of Latvia can replace the uncompleted phase of imprisonment with a different and softer form of punishment, exempt the offender from serving the primary or additional penalty wholly or partially, or expunge the punitive record of the person concerned.

So far during his term of office, Levits has examined 321 cases and issued 16 pardons.
