The State Police (VP) has detained a minor in Liepaja who stabbed her teacher outside the school premises on Saturday, VP's Kurzeme Region Administration head of Liepāja precinct Ingus Ukstiņš told Latvian Radio on September 26.

“On Saturday morning shortly after 10 In Liepāja, Friča Brīvzemnieka Street, a person has been attacked. In a private art salon, a young woman has attacked the owner of the salon, stabbing and causing her bodily harm," said Ingus Ukstiņš.

The victim was taken to the hospital. Her health is not in danger.

Criminal proceedings on intentional bodily injury have been initiated in the VP to establish all the circumstances. A forensic expert examination has been assigned to the injured person in order to determine the severity of the bodily injury suffered.

“The suspect is currently detained, and procedural activities are being carried out with her,” the police spokesman added.

“We're in shock. Nothing like this has ever happened here or possibly in Latvia at all,” Liepāja State vocational school principal Agris Ruperts told Rus.lsm.lv.

According to the principal, the student who assaulted the teacher had joined the school this year.

"This girl has 33 unjustified absences over three weeks. I thought [the teacher] might have been interested in why she didn't attend the school. By phone. And it could probably provoke such a reaction," the principal said. The principal has currently suspended the student until all circumstances are clear.
