A 17-year jail sentence has entered into force for 62-year-old Sajats Abasovs in criminal proceedings for stabbing a tram driver in Liepāja, said the Supreme Court on September 29.

The accused has been sentenced to 17 years of imprisonment, with probation supervision for three years. The defendant has secured EUR 10,000 in compensation for moral damage, which will be received by the spouse of the killed Agris Laugalis.

As reported at the time by LSM, on April 1, 2021, the State Police received information that a tram passenger, under the influence of alcohol, had entered into a conflict with the driver of the tram after the tram door did not open at the stop. The passenger attacked the driver with fists and then with a pocket knife, stabbing him in the neck and thoracic area. The victim died shortly after from his injuries. The assailant himself got out of the tram after what had happened, cleaned his knife, and left the scene.
