The man who attacked a young man carrying a Ukrainian flag has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service, the Prosecutor's Office said June 15.

On May 20, after a march for the removal of Soviet monuments from Latvia, a man attacked another young man who had a Ukrainian flag on his shoulders, causing bodily harm. The perpetrator was detained on June 22 but later released.

The man has been held responsible for causing bodily harm to the victim. On 9 June, he also reimbursed the victim for his claimed full compensation for material and moral damage, or EUR 6034.55.

The attack did not qualify as a crime aimed at provoking national or any other hatred or intolerance, since the accused did not target the young man as a person of a particular nationality, ethnic group, or race, said the prosecutor.

On June 14, the Prosecutor's Office of Rīga, Pārdaugava, completed the criminal proceedings and the accused was found guilty and fined with 200 hours of community service.

The prosecutor identified the characteristics of another criminal offense during the investigation and new criminal proceedings were initiated for failure to fulfill the duties of a public official. These criminal proceedings have been referred to the Office of Internal Security for investigation.
