Latvian Border Guard: offenders are better-prepared

It has been another tense weekend in the Latvian-Belarusian border area. A total of 471 cases of illegal crossing attempts were recorded over the weekend. Recent sightings by border guards show larger groups of 20-30 people trying to cross the border at the same time, Latvian Television reported October 2.

In September and at the end of August, about a hundred migrants a day tried to enter Latvia from Belarus. Border Guard observations show they come better-prepared than they used to.

"Both in terms of clothing and that there's something with then. Things with them, bigger bags. People try to get across with more confidence. The movement is not chaotic, but targeted at specific locations," said Raimonds Kublickis, deputy chief of the Daugavpils Administration of the State Border Guard.

The fence is also purposefully damaged, such as in areas where gates have been built. No pressure has been observed on the closed Silene border post.

The State Border Guard does not expect the weather to reduce the flow – migrants on the border are seen wearing winter jackets. A change of guards is expected from Estonia this week. Last week, help arrived from Lithuania.

In response to the rapidly growing hybrid threat at the border, the State Border Guard has put border guards on additional duty to and requested support from the Army and the State Police.
