NATO celebrates its 75th birthday

On Thursday, April 4, a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of NATO's existence is being held at the Ādaži military base near Rīga.

Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds plus Commander of the National Armed Forces Lieutenant General Leonids Kalniņš, as well as military attachés of NATO and European Union countries will take part in the event.

After the ceremony, those present will be invited to have a slice of cake, which will be cut with a sword by the commander of the National Armed Forces. An exhibition of military equipment will also take place during the event.

Coincidentally, April 4 is also "Shadow Day", a career education program for students from grades 1 to 12 during which young people will have the opportunity to get to know the work of the defense sector by "shadowing" professionals for the day. Hopefuly, they will also be entitled to a piece of cake.

NATO was founded 75 years ago on April 4, 1949, and now has 32 member states sworn to protect each other from external aggression.

President Edgars Rinkēvičs was among those marking the occasion online.
