Latvia's military intelligence chief handed another five-year term in office

The mandate of Indulis Krēķis, the head of the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD), who has been in office since 2002, will be extended for another five years, the government decided on Tuesday.

The term of office of Krēkis expires on January 1, 2024. The government decided to extend it until January 1, 2029.

Krēķis has proven himself as a high-level professional over his more than two decades in charge of the service, the Ministry of Defense stated.

In accordance with the Law on State Security Institutions, the Cabinet of Ministers appoints the head of the Military Intelligence and Security Service for a period of five years on the proposal of the Minister of Defense.

The Military Intelligence and Security Service is a state security institution under the supervision of the Minister of Defense, which carries out military counter-intelligence, intelligence and other tasks specified in the Law on State Security Institutions and other regulatory acts. It is one of three security services run by Latvia, the others being the State Security Service (VDD) and the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB).
