'Solar Eclipse' military drills have started

From May 6 to 16, military training exercises under the title 'Solar Eclipse', organized by the Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Ground Forces, will take place at the Ādaži and Šķēde military training ranges.

"The purpose of the training is to train and improve the abilities of the participating units to plan and conduct military operations and to test the mutual cooperation of units, the integration of air and ground operations, the execution of tactical tasks and the integration of indirect fire in the execution of unit tasks," said advance material from the National Armed Forces (NBS).

The exercises will include the participation of allies from the NATO battlegroup in Latvia, plus units from Estonia, Poland and the United States.

During the training, shooting with both training and combat ammunition will take place at the Ādaži training ranges.

On May 13, firing of the high mobility rocket artillery system (HIMARS) will take place at the Šķēde military training ground, while on May 16, a Solar Eclipse demonstration including HIMARS and artillery combat firing and close air support will take place at Ādaži.

Local residents are asked by the military to adopt an understanding attitude to the increased noise levels and to expect to see plenty of military equipment out and about on the road network.
