Mūrniece was joined by acting Minister of Defense of Denmark Troels Lund Poulsen and the commander of the Multinational Division Headquarters "Ziemeļi", Major General Flemming Mathiasen at the Ādaži base.
"With Latvia's accession to NATO, Denmark has shown special interest and concern for strengthening security in the Baltic states. The most striking example of our cooperation is the creation and development of the headquarters of the multinational division "Ziemeļi", where Latvia and Denmark are the framework countries. Today we celebrate the declaration of full combat readiness for our multinational division... This means that the headquarters is capable of fully planning and implementing military operations in Latvia," said Mūrniece.
“One of the prerequisites for the continued development of the division was the achievement of full operational capabilities, which has been done. The work and professionalism of those serving in the division has allowed us to achieve what we celebrate today. Our operational capabilities complement and strengthen the NATO alliance, and our work is a proof of that," said Major General Flemming Mathiasen.
In addition, the two ministers signed a joint declaration on the further development of the headquarters and the strengthening of the bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Denmark.
The multinational headquarters provides unified command in the Baltic region. In reaching full combat readiness, it has fulfilled the necessary requirements in order to be fully able to ensure situational awareness of security in the region, plan and conduct military operations, command units, organize and implement military exercises and activities, as well as implement other national and collective defense tasks in order to increase the mutual interoperability of the participating countries and the ability to jointly perform defense tasks in accordance with the North Atlantic Treaty.
