On Friday, November 3, a meeting of the External Border Infrastructure Building Monitoring Committee was held to discuss progress on eastern border construction.
The construction of the fence on the border of the state of Latvia-Belarus by November 3 had been ensured at 92.1 km, or 82% of the amount of approximately 112 km planned to be completed this year. A 19.9 km fence is yet to be built by the end of the year.
In the third round of construction work on the land border of Latvia-Belarus, design and engineering studies are underway along the Daugava. The construction of six communication towers, access roads, and patrol paths is planned to be partly financed by European Union funds at this stage.
On the other hand, in the last or fourth round of construction of the border infrastructure on the land border of Latvia-Belarus, coordination of the developed technical specification with the institutions involved is taking place.
The construction of the fence on the external land border of the state is expected to be completed in 2024, but overall the infrastructure of the eastern border of Latvia is planned to be fully built in 2025 so that modern and efficient border guarding infrastructure is established on the entire eastern border.
Over 13,000 people have been prevented from crossing the state border illegally this year, while 406 have been admitted for humanitarian reasons.
