Enhanced watch reinstated on Latvian-Belarusian border

The Cabinet of Ministers at the meeting on Tuesday, March 12, repeatedly declared a reinforced border surveillance regime for six months, starting from Wednesday, March 13, until September 12 this year, the Ministry of Interior said.

The increased operation regime of the border guarding system will be in force in Ludza municipality, Krāslava municipality, Augšdaugava municipality, Reēekne municipality Kaunata parish, and Daugavpils.

Already, the State Border Guard (VRS) ensures continuous protection of the eastern border. But given the increasing number of attempted illegal border crossings, the State Police (VP) and the National Armed Forces (NBS) have been instructed to provide the necessary support in ensuring border guarding of the state border to prevent illegal crossing of the state border.

In accordance with the government order, officials of the VRS, the VP, as well as the NBS are entitled to enter residential premises and land territories for the prevention or management of threats, even if it is not possible to obtain the permission of the owner, possessor or holder.

Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and Finland are also still facing different types of hybrid attacks. Consequently, it is very important to ensure a coordinated cross-border response to such attempts to cross the border illegally in order to ensure an equivalent guarding of the borders of the countries of the whole region with Belarus, the Ministry explained.
