Latvia's border guards will be allowed more overtime

The amendments to the State Border Law of the Republic of Latvia adopted by the Saeima at the final reading on Thursday, October 12, will determine that employees guarding the State border in reinforced mode may have more overtime hours than previously provided for by law.

Taking into account the nature and intensity of the service duties, employees will be able to be assigned overtime hours exceeding the statutory maximum overtime but not exceeding 60 hours per week.

In August, the government announced an enhanced operating regime for the border security system due to the disproportionate number of illegal state border crossings or attempts to do so. The border pressure is regarded as a significant threat.

In September, 3,172 illegal border crossings were recorded, Border Guard representatives previously told the parliament.

The changes will take effect the day after they are announced.
