In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said that the highest number of applications had been received shortly before the end of the application deadline.
“In order to provide an opportunity to apply for the service, it is decided to extend the time limit for young people who have left their application for the state defense service for the last moment,” said the Ministry.
172 young people have already applied for the service, the portal LSM.lv was informed by the Ministry.
The fact that the deadline for the notification has been extended by a week will not in any way interfere with the organization of the second draft, the Ministry told LSM.lv.
If 120 Latvian citizens fit for service will not volunteer for the second draft, random selection will apply.
