'Iron Spear' tank training under way in Latvia

If you hear any big bangs during the next couple of days, the reason could well be the 'Iron Spear 2023' tank training exercises taking place from November 13 to 16 at the Ādaži military training grounds near Rīga.

This year's second exercise in the "Iron Spear 2023" series will involve the battle groups of NATO's extended presence in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland. Tank and infantry fighting vehicle crews from the armed forces of the United States, Italy, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Germany will be among those performing training tasks.

The 'Iron Spear' exercises have been taking place at Adaži since 2017 and have become traditional for every six-monthly rotation of the NATO extended presence battle group.

"The purpose of the exercise is to bring together infantry fighting vehicle and tank crews from different member states, giving soldiers the opportunity to share knowledge, tactics and equipment with combat groups from other Baltic states, as well as to compete with each other for the title of the best crew," said a release from the Latvian Armed Forces (NBS) .

At the end of the training, the best crews are awarded with special prizes. In the tank category, the award takes the form of a literal iron spear.
