Border guard sends extra forces to Latvia-Belarus border

As of Tuesday, August 15, the State Border Guard will mobilize extra border guards in the service for guarding the eastern border, taking into account the rapidly rising hybrid war threat on the Latvian–Belarusian border.

In a statement to the media, the border guard said that 96 people had attempted to cross the border of Latvia–Belarus illegally during the last day, as well as increased involvement of the Belarusian authorities in organizing the flow of illegal immigrants has been recorded.

Information has been received indicating a possible increase in hybrid risk, the border guard said.

Officials of the State Border Guard shall cease to grant annual leave and officials who are currently on annual leave shall be withdrawn from it.

The State Border Guard has also requested additional support from the National Armed Forces and the State Police.

Meanwhile, Minister of Defense Ināra Mūrniece (National Alliance) ordered the NBS to send additional forces to the State Border Guard on the Latvian–Belarusian border.

The NBS, together with its allies, continues to organize military training in Latgale. “This is not only a way of improving the capacity to protect the territory of Latvia, but also increasing the number of troops deployed in the region,” said Mūrniece.

Overall, 5.8 thousand attempts to illegally enter Latvia have been prevented this year, while for humanitarian reasons, 292 people have been granted asylum.
