About half of the remaining fence is planned to be completed this year, and the rest of the fence in hard-to-access areas - by the end of October next year.
VNĪ has concluded 16 contracts with 6 contractors for the works.
Renārs Griškevičs, Chairman of the Board of VNĪ, explained that in parallel, the installation of floating supports or pontoons for the fence was taking place in several places in the marshlands. At present, pontoons have been constructed for a little over 4 kilometers out of the 8 kilometers planned for this year.
A total of 24 kilometers of pontoons are expected to be in place by the end of October next year.
"We can see that the construction of the fence and the infrastructure is progressing ahead of schedule, and we can see that we will achieve our goals," Griškevics said.
The construction of the missing Latvian-Russian border fence started in April this year. Previously, 99 kilometers of fence were built on the border by SIA "Road Construction Company "Igate"" until the work was suspended in 2019.
The Latvian-Russian border infrastructure is expected to be completed in 2025, while the fiber-optic cable and cameras along the fence are planned to be installed by the end of 2026.
The completed fence will form almost the entire 283-kilometer border with Russia. Less than 5 kilometers will remain without the fence, which are border lakes, checkpoints, and similar places where other solutions are foreseen.
