On Wednesday, November 10, State Border Guard officials prevented 21 people from attempting to cross the Latvian-Belarusian state border illegally, the border guard informed.

Since 10 August, a total of 2,216 people have been deterred from crossing the border illegally. There are no detainees for illegal crossing of the state border in the past day, all 21 having been turned back.

Since the introduction of the state of emergency, 62 people have not been prevented from crossing the border on humanitarian grounds, and a total of 414 third-country nationals who have crossed the border illegally have been detained this year.

In the summer of 2021, the number of migrants trying to enter the territory of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland illegally increased significantly . Most migrants have come from Iraq as a result of self-declared Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko's threat to flood the European Union with migrants in response to EU sanctions imposed on his tyrannical regime.

The Latvian government has declared a state of emergency on the border with Belarus which currently extends  until 10 February.
