Belarus-Latvia border crossing attempts pick up again

Attempts by migrants to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally have resumed, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) told Latvian Radio on February 22.

Kozlovskis said it was unclear whether migrants on the border would reappear en masse or in separate groups of just a few people, as is currently the case.

The minister said that one of the reasons migrants resume attempts to cross the border illegally might be an improvement in the weather.

"We are ready, we have clear action algorithms. If necessary, let us start the reinforced regime again to safeguard the country's borders," the minister said. He added that it is not clear to him why these migrants in Latvia are being sent from Belarus, because it is clear that they are being “delivered” from Russia.

The Border Guard said that on Tuesday, February 20, officials detected attempts by three people to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian state border, while on Monday there were six attempts. A total of 23 people have been prevented from crossing the state border illegally this year. The attempts dwindled just before the new year.

Last year 13,863 people were prevented from crossing the state border illegally, while 428 were admitted for humanitarian reasons. Attempts by 5,286 people to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally were prevented in 2022, while 217 people were allowed to cross the border on humanitarian grounds.
