Illegal border crossing attempts still on the rise in Latvia

On Tuesday, August 22, officials of the State Border Guard prevented 143 people from attempting to illegally cross the border of Latvia-Belarus, the border guard said.

Overall, this year 6,277 people have been prevented from illegally crossing the State border, including the 143 people during the last day.

A total of 292 people have been allowed entry for humanitarian reasons.

A day earlier, on August 21, the State Border Guard had prevented 107 people from attempting to illegally cross the border of Latvia-Belarus. In addition, a firearm has been used again for the detention of border offenders.

A week before, when the number of potential border offenders approached a hundred, the State Border Guard mobilized border guards in service for guarding the border of the external state, as well as the support for the border guards was increased by the National Armed Forces.
