The last two weeks have seen a reduction in illegal migration on the Latvian-Belarusian border, the minister said; however, control on the eastern border will not be weakened because the situation may change
He pointed to an increase in illegal migration on the eastern borders of Lithuania and Poland. Finland is also, as it is known, experiencing migratory pressures on the eastern border.
"Working under enhanced regime [at the border with Belarus] has produced some results. There is information that those trying to cross the border into Finland are on Belarusian visas. That means they took a long enough route to get there,” Kozlovskis said.
He expressed caution, pointing out that the current decrease does not mean flows cannot pick up. He drew attention to Russia's visa-free regime with Iran and direct flights. The politician also stressed that control at the eastern border will not be diminished at this time. “We're not going to act so hastily, nor are we going to give a signal that we're relaxing something,” Kozlovskis said.
