Border Guard: Latvia-Belarus border zone is carefully monitored

The State Border Guard said in a statement on February 26 that due to the increased border control regime on the border between Latvia and Belarus, many are refused the issue of special passes for the border zone.

Although the increased operation regime of the border guarding system on the Latvian-Belarusian state border was formally lifted on February 10, 2024, there is still a high risk of hybrid threats by illegal migration and the Belarusian regime on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, therefore an increased border control regime has been established in the border zone on this border until March 10, 2024.

Currently, the State Border Guard receives a large number of submissions with a request to issue special passes to stay in the border zone of Latvia – Belarus, but due to the current situation, some of the applicants are refused to issue a special pass.

In order to stay in the border zone along the State border of the Republic of Latvia – the Russian Federation and the State border of the Republic of Latvia – the Republic of Belarus, persons from the age of 15 years need a special pass issued by the State border Guard, except in cases when:

  • a person who has declared his or her place of residence in the border zone;
  • a person travels on a State road crossing the border zone;
  • an official (employee) of a State administrative institution or local government performs the duties of the service in the border zone;
  • a person has a local border traffic permit issued by the Republic of Latvia.
