Border Guard chief: December had few illegal border crossers

The past few weeks on the Latvian eastern border have been quiet in terms of migrant flows, said Guntis Pujāts, chief of the State Border Guard, in an interview with Latvian Television on December 29.

Over the past five days no one has attempted to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border, said Pujāts, while throughout December there have been 135 attempts. This is a stark difference from the hundreds of daily crossing attempts observed in the summer, and the lowest number in a given month this year.

Pujāts said the low number could be due to the enforced border guarding efforts, as well as the physical infrastructure built so far.

By mid-next year, it is planned to construct the eastern border infrastructure in hard-to-access places, such as marshes or riverbanks. These locations comprise 35 kilometers in total.

It is already known that construction of the fence in the land sections of the Latvian-Belarusian border is planned and will be completed by December 30 of this year.
