"Taking into account the national restrictions related to the spread of COVID-19, the Ministry of Defense informs that the annual military parades of the National Armed Forces scheduled for 11 and 18 November will not take place," the Ministry said in a release.
A number of other events organized by the Ministry of Defense, the National Armed Forces and the National Guard throughout Latvia have also been canceled.
"Considering the rapid increase in the prevalence of Covid-19 in Latvia, I have made the difficult but balanced decision to cancel the military parades of November 11 and 18 in a timely manner. Now more than ever, we must be united and responsible in our actions and actions to limit the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible, protecting ourselves, our families and our loved ones. Despite the cancellation of these traditional holiday events, I call on people to be proud of our soldiers, who won the freedom and independence of our country, and also stand ready today guarding Latvia,” said the Minister of Defense, Artis Pabriks.
Defense Chief Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš, said: “Taking care of the security of the whole society, we have had to make this difficult decision... However, we will take care of the preservation of the health of the whole society, this year we will celebrate the holiday differently.”
