Border Guard will ask to extend emergency in Belarus border zone

The State Border Guard will encourage the government to extend the state of emergency in the Belarus border area by three months, said General Guntis Pujāts, chief of the border guard, on Latvian Television January 12.

The state of emergency, declared August 10, has already been extended once before.

Pujāts stated: “The Border Guard will certainly encourage the government to extend the border emergency in order to maintain both the legal instruments and the powers of the State Police and the Armed Forces to provide support.”

Pujāts said that since August the pressure on the Latvian–Belarusian border has been constant – the number of illegal border crossings has not been as large as in Lithuania and Poland.

“In Lithuania and Poland, the number of these offenses has decreased relatively, Latvia is currently the country to which the largest attack is being targeted. The opposite side probably sought the weakest stage where their aggression could be carried out, an attack. (..) These groups, which are currently arriving at the Latvian border, have been brought from Poland and Lithuania. We are talking to these people, they have not chosen to come here, they have been brought from the other side of state services to the border of Latvia,” Pujāts said.
