Compulsory defense service in Latvia could be postponed by six months

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The first draft of the mandatory defense service could take place in July next year, not in January as expected, the State Secretary of Defense Ministry (AM) Jānis Garisons told Latvian Television October 20.

Garisons said everything will depend largely on how quickly the parliament will view the draft lw.

"Everything depends on the passage of the law. If we can review it in the new Saeima within a month or two months, it would be one story. But if it lasts until the New Year, it would most likely mean that the first draft would not be in January, but in July.

That, on the one hand, [would mean] postponing this system, but on the other, we could much better prepare the selection system and the like," said Garisons.

When asked whether it would be risky to postpone the system in the current situation, he indicated that this would be a serious reform of the defense system, which would change “not only the national protection system but the social contract of citizens with the State”.
