At the Baltic presidents' meeting with US President Donald Trump next week, a declaration will be adopted sending a strong message of the United States' support for strengthening security in the Baltics, President Raimons Vejonis said in an interview with Latvian Television March 29.

"There'll be a summit between the US and the Baltics, on matters regarding increased cooperation in strengthening security, economy, energy and education. But the main topic will be security," he said.

"It is planned to adopt a declaration, from which we expect a very strong political message from the US expressing support for strengthening Baltic security and expressing, once again, support for the independence of the Baltic states," he said.

"If we recall history, in 1940 after Latvia was occupied [by the Soviets]... the US did not accept this incorporation, and without a doubt this helped us regain independence," Vējonis said.

The meeting of Presidents Kersti Kaljulaid, Raimonds Vējonis and Dalia Grybauskaitė with their U.S. counterpart will be followed by a working luncheon.
