Four bridges have already been constructed over several border rivers. Building the fence will accelerate five times, up to one kilometer a day, as the deforested area increases and as infrastructure works are completed.
The project provides for the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian State border line of 173 km. The first round of 85,9 km will be completed by spring 2023 and the second round at 63,9 km by spring 2024. In parallel to the design and construction of the first two rounds, the development of the technical specification of the third – Daugava – phase is taking place.
Deputy Chief of State Border Guard, General Juris Martukāns, pointed out that there is currently no increased flow of persons crossing State borders illegally, yet the border guard prevents attempts by 60 to 80 people per week to enter Latvia. He added that the parameters of the permanent fence are shaped to follow an optimal balance between security needs and construction costs.
