The State Border Guard, in cooperation with the State Police and the National Armed Forces (NBS), is prepared to deal with a large number of offenders on the Belarus border, chief of state Border Guard Guntis Pujāts told Latvian Television November 12.

According to him, the State Border Guard, together with the State Police and the NBS, have so far worked to reduce the number of border offenders on the border with Belarus and thus managed to stabilize the situation in the area. Migrants still attempt to enter the territory illegally from Belarus, but the numbers are not large.

Asked the extent to which the Latvian services are prepared to safeguard the border if there is a larger influx of people, Pujāts said that the total capacity of the services is high. The Latvian services are prepared to prevent a higher number of border offenders from entering and “the readiness is high enough”.

The temporary fence on the border with Belarus has been constructed over 30 kilometers in length. During next week, it is expected to be raised at the length of 37 kilometers.
