Latvia's rescue services need strengthening, says former army commander

Regarding national security, consideration should be given not only to military protection but also to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) and the medical system, former National Armed Forces (NBS) Commander Gaidis Andrejs Zeibots said in an interview with Latvian Radio on July 11.

“In terms of national security, consideration should be given not only to military protection but also to other issues. For example, the war in Ukraine shows the enormous importance of the fire service and the health system. We could talk about public service in these structures,” Zeibots said.

He stressed that Latvia is in a collective defense system and that the future mandatory service would not increase military capabilities but provide long-term reserves. He added that the mandatory service is costly and that Latvian nationals living abroad could renounce Latvian citizenship because of the mandatory service.
