On Thursday, March 8, the Saeima re-elected Jānis Maizītis as Director of the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB), Latvia's secret service.

85 MPs voted for Maizitis, two were against - both from the National Alliance party.

Maizītis was first appointed to the position of Director of SAB on March 14, 2013. Prior to this, Maizītis was National Security Advisor to the President and National Security Council, and before that served as Prosecutor General for 10 years.

The nominees for the position of SAB Director are nominated by the National Security Council and elected by the Saeima. The mandate of the SAB Manager is five years. There is no limit on the number of terms an individual can serve.

SAB is one of the three security and intelligence services in Latvia, the others being the Security Police (DP) and the Defense Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD).
