On Sunday, the last exercises of the “Namejs” military exercises took place in Rīga. During the autumn training phase, soldiers and guardsmen practiced defense operations in the urban environment in cooperation with NATO partners from Denmark and the US. Latvian Television followed the training of the 13th Infantry Battalion of the National Guard in Rīga 5th tram depo on Saturday, October 10.

During the exercises on Saturday, a battle scenario was played out at the tram depo. The national guards with green recognition marks took the role of Riga guards in training. Meanwhile, those with red-and-white ribbons were opponents who are trying to grab territory and destroy the other side.

Commander Ingus Kalniņš said: “We will play out the fact that our opponent has entered the room and is trying to destroy us. We oppose accordingly. By my order, we retreat further. We do counter-attack if necessary."

Training munitions were used in exercises but everything else imitated a real battle.

Kalniņš said: "Personally there is a lot of fatigue as we have started all planning from Monday. Several fights have taken place already. We are also aware that we must also show our presence here on the ground, as Rīga residents, as guards working here, that we are prepared to protect our city."

As the training phase in Rīga continues, residents will no longer hear shooting sounds this week.
