A protest against the introduction of mandatory military service will take place in Rīga on Saturday, according to the organizers 'Rīko'.

As LETA was informed by the organizers, an informal organization planned a protest march at 14:00 from the Freedom Monument to the Ministry of Defense, where speeches are scheduled to be given in Esplanade Park.

Protesters oppose forced “conscription into the army”.

According to organizers of the event, the introduction of such arrangements shows that the Latvian professional army and the National Guard are not attractive to young people.

The protesters are demanding the abolition of the introduction of “recruitment in the army” and insted “making Latvia a country that young people themselves will want to defend”.

The march will take place from Freedom Square along Freedom Boulevard, Elizabetes Street to Esplanade.
