Russian cyber-attacks having little impact in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The number of cyber threats being experienced in Latvia has been rising since the beginning of the year, but Russia is currently making little progress in its regular cyber attacks on Latvia's online resources,
according to Varis Teivāns, a spokesman for the information technology security incident prevention institution Cert.lv, in an interview with Latvian Television.

He said that the cyber attacks originating from the Russian hacking group "Killnet" could be viewed as hooliganism, but preparations already made by Latvia had rendered them largely ineffective. However, the group is believed to be forming cells and  trying to make their cyber attacks more professional to try to seize data.

Teivāns said the general population was not the primary target of these cyber attacks which are generally directed at information systems. He admitted that the attacks sometimes even help to identify those companies that have not taken into account Cert.lv's security recommendations and have not "done their homework".

In general, the most critical resources in Latvia are well protected. Tehran admitted that the work with the responsible authorities is continuing.

The specialist of "Cert.lv" admitted that at certain aggravations, for example, in connection with the dismantling of the Victory Park monument, data leaks could occur from certain purposes. The specialist did not talk about them more specifically.

It has already been reported that charity donation site Ziedot.lv and other sites in Latvia have experienced cyber attacks as a result of an ongoing initiative to demolish a Soviet-era memorial in Rīga. However, despite some disruption donations continue to roll in with more than 250,000 euros raised so far.
