US troops train with Latvian National Guard in Latgale

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Troops of the US 3rd Infantry from Georgia state will be training with local members of Latvia's National Guard in the eastern town of Rezekne from August 4 to 7.

As part of the operation "Atlantic Resolve" training program, the two forces will be teaming up for "tactical field exercises" according to information from the Latvian Defense Ministry.

4 and 5 August will be held in the training exercise command, while the 6 and 7 August - field tactical exercise, during which the soldiers and national guardsmen will practice defensive drills.

The exercises are just part of an intensive cycle of National Armed Forces training programs that started in July and run thru August involving both land and airborne forces.

Consequently, residents are asked not to worry at the sight of the soldiers and the National Guard as they take up positions and to bear in mind that columns of military equipment on the move should be given plenty of space and not be overtaken if you encounter them on the highway.

It promises to be a busy few days in the eastern Latgale region of Latvia with more troops heading towards Daugavpils for exercises titled "Lion's Jump", also part of the "Atlantic Resolve" program and which will test the abilities of Latvia and US units to communicate in the field, among other tasks.

If you still think Latvia's forces aren't training hard enough, you'll be delighted to learn they have also been participating alongside NATO allies in the wonderfully named "Flaming Thunder" exercises in Lithuania.
