University of Latvia elects Gundars Bērziņš as rector

The Constitutional Assembly of the University of Latvia (LU) on Friday, March 1, elected Gundars Bērziņš as the new rector of the university in two rounds of elections, Latvian Radio reported.

The rector candidates were Dean and Professor Gundars Bērziņš of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics and Professor of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics of LU and advisor to the Rector of LU Signe Bāliņa.

88 votes were cast for Bērziņš in the first round, 96 voted against. 84 voted for Bāliņa, 100 voted against.

The election of the rector of the LU shall require at least 101 votes of participants of the Constitutional Assembly. In total, 188 participants of the Constitutional Assembly out of a total of 200 participants have registered for the election of the LU Rector.

The first round thus failed to elect LU's new head and the second round followed, where votes were cast for the candidate who won more support in the first round, Bērziņš.

In the second round, 106 of the participants voted for Bērziņš, 78 voted against.
