Latvian high school graduates get diplomas

As of Tuesday, July 11, certificates on secondary education are available electronically. This is the first year when centralized exam result certificates will only be issued in digital format, but students who want to enter foreign universities and need a paper-based certificate will be able to receive it for free this year, Latvian Radio reported on July 11.

Certificates for centralized exams of general education are available from Tuesday at 9:00, and they are available to educational institutions in the National Examination Information Systems and for pupils on Latvija.lv.

On Tuesday morning, the National Education and Content Center has not observed any problems related to the publication of exam results and certificates. Since it was done gradually, all certificates should be available at lunchtime and schools have not reported any problems either.

Upon enrolling in higher education in Latvia, an examination certificate in paper form will not be required. Liene Bērziņa, head of the communication department of the State Education and Content Center, said that the certificate has legal effect only in electronic format.

“There is only one exceptional case in which [printed certificates] may be necessary - if the pupil intends to join a foreign university and needs, for example, a notarized document. In this case, we call for a submission to the National Education and Content Centre, we can also issue a paper-format certificate,” said Bērziņa. The service is free this year, but it is set to become a paid service in the future.
